I'm a newbie here (although I've been reading a lot on this forum - so much good information!).
I am looking for a puppy and am thinking of going with Astar Golden Retrievers in Bridgewater, MA. The breeder (Bonnie) seems so wonderful, and her dogs are therapy dogs. I am looking for a golden for companion purposes and (possibly) training as a therapy dog. Although, the price for a puppy is $1500 - I was wondering if that is too much to pay for a companion dog? My thought is that as long as the dogs are healthy, have their certifications, ect then the price is fine - but I wanted some other opinions.
That seems to be about the normal price for a companion! Definitely well worth the money for a dog from a good breeder!! Make sure all clearances are in order.
I think its the average price for a GR which is from a reputable breeder. As 'Rainheart' says definitely worth the money you will get much more than that back from your dog
That looks fair to me just glancing at the pedigrees? Just make sure that both parents have all their clearances. You need to see hips, elbows, and heart and eyes. Looking them up on offa.org, looks a little spotty. Something to discuss....
The price seems to be in line with the area for a litter with a history of clearances, hips, elbows, heart, and eyes for multiple generations. They have some beautiful dogs. Some clearances aren't posted to OFA unless submitted so please ask to see them. Best of luck.
The price range for a well bred puppy from parents with full clearences ranges from roughly 1000-2000 depending on your area. I would say that 1500 is middle of the road.
Just make sure you are verifying the core four clearences. You should be able to verify elbows and hips on Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Ideally you would see hearts (cardiologist) and eyes(annually) on there too but, if not please ask to see the reports.
Personally, I also like to see a title or two on one or maybe both of the parents.
Not sure if the website is current. Are looking at a Brett x Star puppy?
$1500 is a steal if the dogs come from a long history of careful health clearances and proof of true Golden ability and temperament. Compared to a $500 puppy with no clearance history, the extra $1000 you spend up front buys you a lot more than $1000 worth of risk reduction on your pup.
hmmm we spent over $500 on a dog from a reputable breeder back in the early 90s. Ended up spending many many thousands due to health issues. We did not however have the same experience with a $25 dog purchased in the early 80s.
Seems like the going price in the Northeast. As others have said, make sure see current eye clearances(within one year) and a cardiologist clearance on the daddy.
