I first want to "Thank" everyone who posts to this forum for helping others. I am currently searching for reputable breeders of Black long flat coated Retreivers in the Massachusetts area. I am looking for the dog to be a family companion. Pups as well as open to adopting healthy dog.

Cookie Kelley who used to breed Goldens, breeds flat coats in Chelsea, Maine.

I don't think Shalva breeds flat coats still, but she may be able to point you in the right direction.... ?

I think definitely contact the flat coat breed referral for your area and make sure that the breed is what you are looking for. I think they are very nice dogs, but they are not exactly the same as goldens that I've seen? I think they take even longer than goldens to mature, and while they are very intelligent and learn quickly what you want - I think they are closer in temperament to labs than goldens as far as hanging out around the house? They weren't really bred to be laidback.

Not sure if you are looking for a pure bred or mostly looking a dog that looks like a black golden.

We have seen a lot of dogs and puppies in golden rescues that are beautiful golden/lab mixes that resemble the Flat Coated Retriever. You might want to look in that direction too. You won't have the clearances of a reputable breeder, but you will be saving a life.

The flat coats I've met are very nice dogs. Not surprisingly their owners always seem enthusiastic about them but always seem to make sure you know they're not just like black golden retrievers.
