We have had six Shelties. They are very loyal to their family. We have run the gambit on personality, we got a female when she was 1 1/2 and she was very aloof. One male, he was timid only because when he was puppy, the neighbors German Shepard jumped the fence and broke his leg; he had to have surgery to set it with screws and plates. One female was friendly but protective, another female, OMGosh she was the funniest, sweetest most loving dog to everyone. The two my mom has now are her babies and they act like it...lol They were not all barkers, they were all, except the male and the one female are friendly to strangers. They do have high herding instinct. They are super athletic! Smart, smart, smart! All of them had a "off switch"
I love Shelites and I love goldens...my husband prefers a bigger dog, so....a golden. He would actually rather have a malamute...lol
