Breeder in MO/IL area? And some puppy questions

I'm looking for reputable breeders. I'm located between St. Louis, MO & Springfield, IL, and I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance to look at puppies. I just really want to make sure I find a good breeder. The last I used was good, but I thought I'd ask here before saying who

I'm looking for a companion for a rural area. I have horses, cats & another dog (a cavalier King Charles spaniel), so that's the lifestyle the Golden would have. I had a Golden up until three years ago, and I'd really love to have another in my life sometime in the next year or so. I'm just starting the process of looking.

Also, I was wondering if it's possible to look for a Golden on the smaller size? My last was over 90 lbs, and while I loved him greatly, that was bigger than I had really wanted. Any chance of guaranteeing a smaller adult size?

Thanks!

I'm in Maine so I have no leads for you. The breed standard for a golden in the the 65 to 75 pound range. Most good breeders will shoot for that range. Best of luck in your search.

A reputable breeder will be breeding to standard and should be able to provide clearances (OFA hips/elbows, annual CERF exam for eyes & cardiologist cleared hear) spanning generations in the pedigree.

Here is the contact info for the Golden Retriever Club of St Louis breeder referral:

And just in case you stumbled across their website--please stay away from Sievers Retrievers/Kennels...just ask the rescues how many of these dogs they see & the number of hip replacements performed.

The Golden Retriever Club of Greater St. Louis was very helpful in providing references for reputable local breeders in the surrounding area.

We recently had a wonderful "meet and greet" with one of the breeders and are now waiting for a Spring pup to arrive.
