My family is on the hunt for a golden retriever to be trained as a service dog for our daughter. So far, we have looked into paradise and eagle ridge. Does anyone know of other reputable breeders in the central Florida area?

Thanks for the feedback. Have you heard anything about eagle ridge? And also Paradise?
I've spoken to quite a few breeders in the area, going through the health info. The one drawback we are finding is that these pups are a little more than we'd like to spend. No disrespect to the time, effort and investment the breeders are putting in. My daughters pharmacy bill alone is nearly $2000 per month. It's a hard pill for me to swallow (no pun intended) to spend that on a pup, and then the training investment (above and beyond obedience).
I may be swatting a wasp nest with this question, but how important are the clearances? What is the risk of buying a pup whose parents don't have clearances, but don't have health problems?

If the dog comes down with a severe health issue, would the breeder refund you the price of the puppy? For instance, would the breeder not doing clearances (BYB), give you money back?

Ask the BYB what they know about the parents lines and health? MOST do not have a clue. It all depends on how important health is to you and preserving the breed to best of its ability. I do not want to pay $500 for a puppy if one of the parents has SAS or cataract...etc. But BYB will tell you that their dogs are healthy. How are they healthy? By doing a routine vet check?

Goldens mean the world to me, so I save up and go to someone who will always be there for me and my dog for the length of his/her life. I can call or email and ask important questions that I have. Most reputable breeders do not just have clearances on the parents, but grandparents, great grandparents and so on.

Hip Replacement surgery is roughly $5,000. That is not no where near what reputable breeders ask.

If you are looking for a service dog, you need one with a rock solid temperament. That is another benefit of going with a reputable, experienced breeder, they should know their lines and help pick the perfect pup for your needs.

As far as health clearances, you don't want to put all the money, time, and emotion into training a service dog, only to have the dog have a health issue pop up that prevents it from doing its job. Of course there are no guarantees in life, but a small investment up front can significantly reduce the chances of problems later on.

The only other option I would recommend is contacting a golden rescue group for an ADULT golden that has the qualities needed for a service dog.
