I agree with everything everyone has posted. I co-own one of my dogs with her breeder, and have no complaints. Actually, her breeder as acted as a mentor for me in this crazy dog world. She has introduced me to others who have taught me great amounts of information. In my case, I have taken an interest in not only obedience showing, but conformation showing, and have done some myself. My dog is mine, and I have good friendship with the breeder.

I feel that it is important with co-ownerships for those involved to have a good friendship. If you feel that this can not happen, then I would not go through with this. As long as this dog is in your life, this breeder will also be. Like others posted, you have to be okay with someone else having a say about your dog.

Great help guys, I really do appreciate it. Again being new to this, I wasn't sure if this kind of arrangement was common or not. I'm a little more at ease now.

I will certainly be asking her the questions above, and also if I made the decision to accept, write out an ironclad contract.

Thanks everyone!

Good luck with whatever decision you make and that you are going to be happy with the outcome.
I personally would never agree to co-ownership.

My third golden was sold on a co-ownership which would be changed to just me if and when she got her clearances and had a litter. Her breeder was a breeze to co own with, the contract very clearly stated her "rights" and my "rights". When all was said and done, I never bothered having her change the registration to just me... That was my sweet, wonderful Starseeker's Kissmas Cookie CDX RE CGC. The dog was mine, the titles were mine. In this case, it was just a piece of paper...

And I didn't know the breeder at all at the beginning. I just knew I wanted another dog that descended from the Colabaugh lines... We are still great friends twelve years later....
