Oranges vs. Snickers bars

Why can't oranges be like Snickers Bars? With Snickers you KNOW every one will be delicious. Part of my orange today was dried out and the rest of it tasted kind of putrid. Yesterday's orange from the same bag was great. Where's the quality control?????? p.s. passed today's orange to Dan; it's not garbage until HE says it's garbage!!

While I was typing this, Dan ate the orange. I had them all separated on a plate and left it at his place on the table. He came in and said: So, orange doesn't taste so good?" No, or I would have eaten it...

He admitted it was 'a little off' and then proceeded to finish it. So, guess it wasn't garbage after all. The man has no palate.

I have this problem with nectarines. I love love love nectarines, and most are good, but ugh, it's awful when you bite into one that's all pithy and dry. Blech!

Too bad Snickers bars can't also be as healthy as an orange.

Now there's a concept!!!

There's very few fruits I'll buy at the grocery store. I only buy peaches when they're in season, from the farm stand. I'll buy apples, bananas, oranges, strawberries and grapes at the store but that's about it.

One of the best parts of fall is going to the apple farm for cider and fresh apples. It's almost Honeycrisp apple season. And Michigan Macs are the best but only for a couple of weeks, then they're too aged.

This is so true... I've found oranges are the hardest to determine if they're "good" before you peel or cut them open. Sometimes, i get the most delicious orange ever, but other times, it's sour and yucky. And I too, wish a Snickers bar could be as healthy as an orange!! LOL

I'm "allergic" (my throat swells up) to apples, peaches, plums, and pears... so yes... technically, snickers are healthier.

Oranges and tangerines I do the skin check and the squeeze test at the grocery store.

What world are you guys living in lol....oranges are so unhealthy that you have to have a snickers daily just to be healthy lol.

Ok out my my world and back to reality. I don't buy much fruit from anywhere because I can't tell if the oranges will be good and I always seem to get the bitter tasting ones. I pick apples off my own trees in my yard other than that I don't mess with fruit aside from grapes....I've never gotten funky grapes before.

Watermelons too... Sometimes they're not ripe on the inside. Sometimes no flavor. Sometimes they're overripe and super soft and almost going bad...*gag*...and with the cost... it's SO sad to get a bad one!

Though I had a dream last night where my brother was at the store with me...and selected a special fancy large watermelon that was $28! I was SO unhappy... "But, we're only getting half...so we can tell it's good!" I was disapointed to wake up and not have watermelon...

I worked in Citrus Research in my younger years.

It was a great, fun job since I was totally involved in R&D. We experimented with training a computer to determine if an orange was acceptable based on weight, digital images, etc.

We grew some of the weirdest trees from the sections of an orange that were truly "off". Nice thick skin, weird pulp? Okay, let's grow a seed from that part and see what we get.

The bosses would sit around figuring out how to write up grants to keep us all employed for another year. As far as I know we were never able to train a computer to sort the fruit and you had to rely on people eyeballing them as they rolled down a conveyor belt and removing the bad ones.

I won't buy peaches and rarely buy pears at the store, because they're all hard as rocks and not good even after they ripen. I know that one of the things I will miss most about leaving California will be my orange tree (fresh juice every morning) and my peach tree. I need to check out some of the farmers' markets around here and see if the produce is any good. We had a great one we used to frequent in California. It's really hard to get good produce at a grocery store. It's picked so early so it doesn't rot during shipment that it's often like hockey pucks.
