Scary, scary, scary

I went to a friend's house last Sunday and when I got home DH was on the front porch and wanted to show me something. Not the same connotations as when we were younger.

He heard the BassettX Jack and Fiest Trouble making a huge racket on the side of the house. When he stepped out the door, he immediately knew what was wrong.

A 3.5' Timber rattlesnake was coiled up and pretty mad. Yes, he did shoot it and then removed the head for safe burial away from all my animals.

Trouble was shaking she was still so scared. Jack wanted in the house - now!
Copper finally woke up and came to see what the fuss was all about. He sniffed, wagged his tail and promptly tried to eat the lovely treat DH had obtained for him. That boy will eat ANYTHING.
DH was quick enough to take the treat back this time since I really fussed when he let Copper swallow a squirrel last year.

I generally wander all around the woods by our house. I shall be more careful in the future. Poisonous snakes scare me and now I am just a little creeped out!

I just had a nightmare a couple a nights ago about hiking and Finn getting bit by one. It is a fear that I have. That must be why I don't go hiking much by myself.

I know how you feel. Tuff and I are always out back in the woods doing something or another. I worry about him being bit. I guess it could happen on the fron porch also though. I just try and be aware and always look around.

We're out in the woods all the time. this snake was right on one of our dog paths.
We came across one that was quite a bit bigger than this one a few years ago, but I was my horse and just went around it and called copper to come on. the horse sure did the boogie woogie once that snake rattled at us.

We've come across wild hogs which will attack the dogs if we are on foot, but they ran the one time I came across them while riding. We've seen bear tracks, but I've never come across them while on foot or when the dogs were with me. the horse has been unimpressed the few times we came across one.

The body is in the ravine and the head is gone, but I found out last night that the rattle is in DH's possession. He snuck up on me and rattled it in my ear. Do you think I could claim justifiable homicide in that case?

Alan - I still laugh at your description of your encounter with a copperhead last fall. You just painted such a vivid picture in my mind.
It is a worry about the dogs though.

Wow, you have lots of critters living near you. I would be scared to venture far from the house, but I'm a wimp.

I live in the city limits, and encountered a copperhead on our morning walk. It was soaking up the morning sun on an asphalt path through a local park. I always watch my feet, but also worry about my pups running in our woods!

I Know what I would do - pack up and leave town. I am TERRIFIED of snakes and DH knows it. Fortunately we've only seen one and that was when we moved in and were cleaning out the underbrush in the back of the yard. DH was raking in March and raked it up, he yelled "go away - don't look" so of course I looked. He flung the snake over the fence into the woods, well it hit a tree and hung there. I don't thing it was out of hibernation when it took to the air.

I really don't know what I would do now, still freak out I would imagine.
