have you ever utterly, completely failed at anything?

me, waitressing, when I was in college:

- had to dress up in black and white like a dadblamed penguin
- never could draw a beer w. a head - mine looked like day-old horse pee and the customers sent them back. Boss cranky.
- food leftovers gross me out. Took all my willpower not to throw up on people when I picked up their plates. Boss said it showed in my face. Boss cranky.
- got blisters from the penguin shoes I had to wear. Cranky.
- never got any tips. Deserved, but cranky.
- quit after 5 days (before Boss beat me to it) and went to shovel manure at a horse barn. Sooo much better!

so what are your glorious failures? Let's hear.

Rollerblading I bounced off the cement ever so lady like I'm pretty sure I cracked my tailbone. Public speaking if only I wouldn't turn red as beet! And yes some days parenting but overall I think my son's turning out to be a fine young man so maybe not parenting!

Footwork.

Whether it is the footwork for novice obedience or for learning Irish dance moves back in summer girls camp... ugh.

Oh and camping was epic fail too. I like hiking outdoors, but I don't do sleeping outdoors.

Algebra II ! I made all A's and B's in everything, until my junior year in high school when I had to take Algebra II. I made a big fat F. I just didn't "get it." I retook the class and got a C but I think that was a gift. I still can't do Algebra worth crap. In college, I only had to take ONE math course, "College Algebra" and I squeaked by with a D. That was just luck. I can add and subtract all day long, but ask me to do anything above about 3rd grade math, and I'm screwed.

College Algebra/trig the first time around. I went back to college in my mid 20s and got it that time. It just took a persistent teacher who finally got it through my head.

Rollerblading - I had to use a rake to keep me upright to just try to figure it out. I finally gave the skates ot a youngster. they were a christmas present.

I used to fail at keeping my temper and watching my mouth, but I got better as I aged.

The only job I ever got fired from (so far) was waitressing in college. I spilled a bowl of green beans in a customer's lap. OOppps.

Skiing

I really never wanted to learn but did for DH and I tried, I really tried. But the only thing that I was good at was "getting back up". The instructor said that my falls were "spectacular" and that he was amazed that I mastered getting back up so fast, maybe he meant he was amazed that I kept getting back up.

My second lesson I tore the ligament in my left knee, a week before we flew to Vegas for the cup race in 2001. Yah, crutches in Vegas and crutches at a crowded Nascar cup race and the airport.

I suck at waitressing too!

Sewing. I had a sewing class ("home economics" it was called) in middle school. I was terrible. To this day I can do nothing but sew on a button.

So many things I can't begin to count! But I guess I'm a bit stubborn because I always look at failure as a starting point.

The first time I went skiing, I was dumb enough to let a friend teach me. My first five minutes on skis involved me going down the beginner's hill very fast with my skis pretty much parallel. My friend was yelling at me to snowplow, but since we didn't cover the basics before we got to the hill, I had no idea what she meant. So I went straight down the hill and ended up tangled in the orange netting that keeps you from flying into the trees with my skis, poles, and hat thrown in every direction. It was pretty spectacular.

So, I went to the lodge and had a hot chocolate. After half an hour, I got up, went back out, and tried again. That time I got the tail end of my jacket hooked on the T-Bar and the lift operator didn't notice. So I was being hauled around the lift hanging from my jacket to the delight of all of the other skiers in line. Excellent. Another fine moment in my skiing history.

But I just kept going out there. And today I'm a pretty darn good skier, if I do say so myself.

For me, it's much easier to lose interest in something I'm good at. If I'm pretty awful at something, I feel the need to keep on trying until I conquer it.
