There's a common story that circulates about "success and failure".

The story goes that "Thomas Edison failed more than 1,000 times when
trying to create the light bulb". (The story is often told as 5,000
or 10,000 times depending on the version.) When asked about it,
Edison allegedly said, "I have not failed 1,000 times. I have
successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb."

The idea is that -- even if you try and fail, it doesn't mean that you
didn't learn something.

I guess what I learned from the skiing episode is that I fall really well and that I really didn't get it at all. I kept asking DH when the fun part would start....

It was ride up the hill, slide down the hill, - repeat. Occasionally have a spectacular spill, get up and ride up the hill, slide down the hill. The whole time getting wetter and colder... I still don't get it.

Now give me a snowmobile and those hills would be fun!!

yes!

I failed miserably at being a coffee bar barista. Was fired after 1 day. I also failed miserably at college level chemistry. I just couldn't do it. I studied and studied and studied and just never had the lightbulb go on in chemistry. So I switched majors.

I also failed miserably at being an owner-handler for Jack in conformation shows. But I'm still practicing....I haven't let that one go yet!

Jazz dancing. I took a class when I was in high school and was entirely too uptight to do it, so I dropped out after 2 classes.

French. I took three years of Spanish and in my last year, I decided to take French I. Ummm, it's very hard to switch between Spanish and French (and English). I dropped the class 2 weeks in.

College. I never much cared for classes and "school" learning. I have always learned much better in a hands on type of setting. I didn't want to go to college right out of high school, but my parents insisted. I dropped out one semester in and married my ex husband. He was my ticket out. We only stayed married for 4 years, but I never wanted to go back to school. It's hindered me in some job searches because college education is huge in the employment world, but fortunately, I have always had a fantastic work ethic and have always had great reviews from any of my employers, so that has always gotten me in the door. I probably have a fantastic work ethic because I know I have to make up for the lack of college education, so I have to prove it in showing up for work and working extra hard.

Basketball. I'm decent to pretty good at most sports but I just can't figure out basketball. I'm awkward when I play it and absolutely horrible.

Skiing! Languages! Math! Chemistry! Sewing! School!

There are so many things I'm really, really bad at. As a young kid..I did sewing in 4-H for 10 years. TEN years and I was SO bad at it...I never did well!

Cooking is another problem. Baking specifically. I blame it on the oven...

I rode horses for 10 years... never could learn to see/feel leads... I can describe it and tell from the ground...but once I'm up there, it all looks the same from that view! Diagnals "only" took three years. And this is with 1-2 lessons a week.

Cleaning/organization. I try... but... my attempts are laughable.

It's all in the shoulders and the pull at your knees and your hips.

On the subject... I'm an epic fail at cantering without stirrups.

It's something you should be able to do, especially when you ride and show equitation. If you show amateur, you might get some judges who throw a "drop one stirrup" call in if the competition is tight.

But I haven't been able to do it ever without falling right off.

Regular and road trotting (rougher gaits than the canter) - I can do without stirrups just fine.

It's a mental failure.

Calculus. I took it in college and withdrew failing, of course after the class drop deadline, so I paid to fail! Blah!

I read somewhere that:

"No man is a failure until he fails at something he LIKES to do". Don't know who said it.

I never got the hang of riding bareback: their skin sliding on their bones under my skin sliding on my bones.... Too much sliding. I always ended up on the ground.

I have failed utterly at having the perfect garden I always envision during January when the seed catalogs arrive.

Crocheting. Just can't get that beyond a row or two of double crochet to finish off a knitted sweater.
