NDR...Viral hives...

If someone has any advice, I would really appreciate it.

My daughter, who is 15, came down with a viral infection last Thursday. Fever, runny nose, and a lot of coughing. Then, on Sunday night, broke out in horrible hives. Itchy, red and slightly raised. We went to the doctor on Monday and was told it was due to the virus, (viral hives), and could last up to 3 weeks, on and off.

I have never dealt with this before and she is miserable. I gave her a 1/4 dose of Benedryl, but she won't take anymore because she is adamant about doing her homework, (doesn't want to fall behind ), and if she gets sleepy, she can't concentrate. I know about oatmeal baths and aloe...and we're using ice, applied to the hives, and that seems to work, (very short term relief), ...but is there anything else anyone has used that did the trick?

They seem worse today , (weather's really warmed up, so I'm sure that's not helping), so we're both desperate for the itching to stop, or at least be tolerable...

My daughter said to say thanks for any help...

Hmm the doctor didn't give her a steroid or anything? calamine lotion helps with chicken pox. I am sorry she has to experience this, poor thing.

Try Zyrtec. It is OTC and doesn't cause as much drowsiness.

Poor thing I get hives when I get to stressed thanks to my Grandma she did too. I think Zyrtec and Claratin both have non drowsey. My son swears that Claritin works best. He also breaks out in hives during the spring and summer he has terriable allergies and hates benadryll because it makes him sleepy. He's 18. Good luck

Zyrtec knocked me out for 48 hours, so it can cause severe drowsiness. Claritin is over the counter and I have had very good itch relief and no drowsiness with it.

I hope she feels better soon.

I am surprised the doctor had no better help for her than how long it lasts.
Hope the suggestions help. She doesn't have any in her throat does she? As that can be dangerous.
