| Welcome to my world. Real conversation - Student says, "You can't fail me!" I say, "Yes, I can." Students says, "no, you can't!" I say, "yes, I can." Student, totally astonished, says, "But WHY????????????" I say, "Well, you rarely came to class, you never did homework, you failed every quiz and exam." Student says, and I swear to you this is the truth, "So?" ~~bang head against wall and move on~~

| the real answer would be "because they don't have to" and sooner or later they will pass. I once failed half a class (among many others) and the principal still hates me for that. The good thing is all those students knew I did it to improve their performance and thanked me big time after they graduated. Which is big, and it won't happen now anymore. This was 3 years ago... The funny thing is the principal wanted someone else to teach that class for their final high school year and they protested like crazy and threatened to leave the high school Made me feel appreciated for my hard work...

This really surprised me when I read your post. My son graduated from UC Davis and I don't remember him ever complaining about this type of thing and, believe me, he would have. He was extremely dedicated, (pulled straight A's all 4 years and is now at MIT), and so were all his roommates, friends and the people he did projects with during his time there. Maybe it was his majors, (BioChem and Molecular Bio), that made a difference in dedication levels, but I don't think so. Maybe you've just encountered a cluster of students not caring, but I really find it difficult to believe it's the "norm" as you stated...at least not from my experiences and those of several of my friend's kids who attend/attended Davis. You're making it seem that the majority of students there don't care. I'm sure there are a few...but the "norm", I just don't buy it. |

Don't get me wrong, I love UC Davis. But honestly, there is a difference in the majors. I have found people are very dedicated in the biological sciences, from the classes I have taken in the area. I am a psychology major and I find the dedication dwindles drastically. I talked to my brother who was a biochem major at Davis and he did not have the same experience. My sister, who was a human development major at Davis, did report dealing with the same experiences.

| I think that's the norm and really it gets worse when you get out of school. Really it amazes me the number of people that get by with just doing the bare minimum. My husband and I are always shocked when we get rave reviews for what a great job we're doing. We're doing our jobs. We're not slacking, but sometimes the praise we've gotten you'd think we were doing a lot more than that. I do wish more people would take pride in their work and their attitude wasn't "that's good enough." but good for you for putting in the extra effort. You'll be better prepared to succeed in the real world

| Nicole, this isn't just college. You won't believe how people are at their jobs! My husband has been through so many co workers who goof off all day, are lazy, incompetent, have no pride in doing good work and eventually get fired. But it seems to take forever for the boss to actually fire them and my husband is tired of carrying the load of everyone else. I remember feeling that way when I was working. I don't know what happened to a good work ethic. |

| Its like good work ethic has gone out the window regarding school and jobs. When I worked I loved working in customer service fields, especially waitressing. I loved being able to give what I could to a customer to make that experiance great. Now that Im not working and on the other end of the spectrum as a customer I find more and more that Im disgusted by employees in stores that I shop in. Whether it be in the service itself or just going as far as an employee not even caring what they look like. Im sorry but who wants to get food from someone with greasey hair, a snotty irritated look on their face and a dirty uniform that looks like it hasnt been washed since they recieved it. There is ONE single place I actually enjoy going to because of their outstanding service that is just beyond amazing. Verizon Wireless, seriously the one place Id expect to have the most headaches at I actually find myself walking into when I dont even need to go there just to say hi to the people that have helped me. I dont even like going out to eat because while Im not a psycho about stuff I do hold servers to the standards I placed upon myself when I worked, do your job and do it right. Ugh it just baffles me that people think that they can coast by on life and not work at anything whether it be school or a job. |

| I hate to say this and will probably get blasted for it but... where are the parents? If my brother or I brought home a C on a report card it was trouble. We had to work extra hard and bring that grade up. That was very hard for me because math and I did not speak the same language. There were expectations and consequences for bad attitude, talking back and just plain not performing. We didn't get TV time, play time or phone time until homework was done. There were no F's or D's (accept for math a few times ) because our parents had rules and consequences and those rules held through when we went to college, got jobs and married. I don't think it's everyone but it's more pervasive then I first thought. This is not aimed at parents who are active and setting rules for their children but there are quite a few kids out there that get away with anything, scary for our future.
