Call all Crafty People

For a while now I have been knitting blankets for the cats/kittens at our local shelter. An averaged sized cat cage will hold a litter pan, bowls for water/food and a blanket that is sized approx. 12" X 18". I've included a pic of some of the blankets I've made and they are easy to make as its all knit stitched (no purling involved) so that the blankets feel a bit thicker.
Could I please encourage all of you who are knitters, those who do crochet (sp?) and perhaps even those who can sew to volunteer some of your time to make some thickish blankets/comforters and make a difference in a shelter cat's life? Of course, always check with your local shelter to find out sizes and what materials they perfer. A big thank you in advance.

Here is a pic of a cat at the shelter sitting on top of the 3rd blanket on the right of the pic. http://www.petharbor.com/detail.asp?...where=type_CAT
(They laid the blanket upside down but what the heck)

Wow, that's so generous of you!!! I'm sure the kitties appreciate having something soft to sleep on. I wish I could sew, crochet or knit but unfortunately I wasn't blessed with any talent in that area. My donations to our local shelter will have to remain being in the form of money, food and desperately needed items.

That is wonderful of you!!!! I bet the little animals love having a warm blanket. I don't have a crafty bone in my body. I take a weekly trip to our local shelter and donate cleaning supplies and newspapers. Our shelter was lucky enough to win a grant for 5 years worth of free food (hooray!!!!) I've never thought of blankets. My aunt can sew. Maybe I can talk her into making a few. What an awesome idea.

What a Great idea, but I am not crafty in the least bit. Now my Mom crochets baby hats for newborns at our local hospital. I will pass this info on to her. Thanks for taking the time to make blankets for your shelter! (they will be cozy this Fall)

Oh wow, that is BRILLIANT! How many stitches across for the blankets do you do? I found some old pillows and an old flannel duvet cover that I was thinking of making little beds and donating them. I'd love to knit some stuff for the cat rescues in town. Great idea!

I LOOOOOOVE knitting and crocheting, have tons of leftover wool, a 2 hour train commute every day AND I've been trying to find some smaller, quick projects to do and those would be perfect. Thanks for posting that, I'll try and get started on one this week and let you know how it goes!

Usually, if you cast on 48 stitches it will give you 12" across (depending on the yarn you use). I avoid real wool because it shrinks when washed. I keep knitting until I hit about 18" or so. I've just finished 9 more blankets. I am forever looking for yarn on sale or at yard sales.
