Because the companies marketing departments know that pet owners will spend a ton of money on their pets for things at a price level they wouldn't spend on themselves.

Because it says DOG on it and they know someone will buy it.

Have you ever how much money is spent on pet supplies each year? (guilty as charged!)

I just ordered from this place. Price was better than most and by ordering 3 of the large I saved as it was the shipping charge for 3 as it was for one. And they have an expiration date of June 2015.

I've never made my own, but here's one link I just found, although I question the amount of salt used:

Homemade Dog Toothpaste | eHow.com

Anyone else have experience making their own doggie toothpaste?

And, here's another link which mentions that the salt is optional:

I am wondering if you can just use plain baking soda or coconut oil.

A much easier and more natural way for dogs to maintain clean teeth and healthy gums is to occasionally provide them with raw knuckle bones.

Teeth cleaning procedures and doggy toothpaste are rather recent (considering the long history of dogs) alternatives once many people stopped providing their dogs with bones.
