| Of course it's worth it!! My parents taught me that anything worth having is worth working for.

| You want to feel like your brain is really exploding? I went back to college in my 50's to get my degree. At night I could feel my brain leaking out of my ear LOL

| lol i give so much credit to people who haven't been to school in years. Most that I've talk to don't remember crap and literally have to start from scratch. Coming from high school stuff is still kind of fresh in my head but for people who haven't been to school in a long time and still get their degree or even trying i have the most respect for. |

| I hear ya. I went back to uni at 26/27 and am now two weeks into my third winter term. Christmas holidays were NOT enough time to refresh and rejuvenate. Last week I had my first 4th level history course. We had to read four 50+ scholarly journal articles and then discuss in a 3.5 hour class. I read all the articles, took notes, highlighted and didn't have a freaking clue what the discussion was about in class. I didn't participate at all. I just sat there with a deer in the headlights look while the information was flying over my head. My other history class has a prof who likes to play what I've coined, "Reverse Jeopardy". Basically, he asks questions but instead of buzzing when you have the answer, he buzzes YOU. He'll just randomly yell, "GIRL IN BACK CORNER, Why did...What did...and Why....?" Right while you're taking notes. In that class, he asked me a question and I totally mangled the answer. He looked at me and then gave me the sympathy card of "I think you misunderstood the question..." Oh god. Sometimes the stress can be overwhelming. I have so many commitments and aspects of my life that get left behind with the start of term. Dating? Yeah, right. I'm on my second consecutive term of 5 courses, plus working part-time. Next year I "should" be graduating, so in a few weeks I'm applying for honours which will be more pressure. Thesis, primary sources, know what prof I want to work with, etc. even just to apply. The doing a 40-50 page thesis next term on top of a five course load...not to mention GPA has to remain high and I have to get into all the right classes. Oh, and all the history profs know me so I have more expectations placed on me. Yep, even just thinking about this makes my stomach hurt. The best thing I can say is just "one step at a time". Get organized so you know what's due and when, what the expectations are, and then hit it up like that. Don't worry about assignments due too far in the future...just clear your plate as much as you can. I only look ahead about 3-4 weeks in advance, unless I have a special case that I know will take longer. But it is worth it. Whenever I get stressed, I always remind myself that I'm happier to be in school than I was when I was in a going-nowhere job. |
