My ten year old says to me yesterday that she found something weird on MacKenzies foot a few days earlier but forgot to tell me. So she picks up MacKenzie's foot, and screams, "Mom, it has gotten bigger!"

I grab her foot and see this little growth between her toe nails, I follow it to the bottom of her foot, and it looks like she has an extra toe or is it a tumor. It is the same color and roughness as her other toes. Now MacKenizie is crying everytime I go to touch it, so not like her.

My stomach is in knots, I am thinking, how the heck I did not notice this earlier. She is walking fine, my daughter is questioning me what a tumor is, my mind is spinning on what would happen if they cut her foot off, etc - and oh, my she is only three years old. In the next few hours, I try to have her soak her foot, to at least wet down some of the fur, so I can get a better look. I can see a little bit more between the toes above, now it is looking a little whiter, so I tell my daughter we will have to wait until she falls asleep, because she is not letting me touch it.

She falls asleep, I look at her foot, and now the "tumor" is not as round as it once looked, I go to touch it, and it is it is squishy, so I open her toes up a little, an decide to be brave to pull a little on it, because I can't quite see where it is attached to skin.

It was gum! Who knows how she got it, I pulled most of it off her. I swear it looked just like an extra toe, almost the same size. It would have been quite embarrassing if I rushed her to the vet today.

Thank goodness she is okay!

I would have loved to have seen the look on your vets face upon discovering what this growth actually was. But my bet would be it's probably happened more than once.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

That is too funny. Dogs can be so dramatic, crying every time you touched the gum. lol So glad it was a false alarm.

If my daughter hadn't told me it had gotten bigger, I probably wouldn't have freaked out so fast. I think I have just heard so many horror stories on this forum, that my brain just went wild.
