There was cambridge and myself doing our walking, when i looked down the road, i saw a dog, and a women, the dog looked like a pit bull type, I AM SCARED OF THEM, well i thought move over to the other side of street, as i was about to do so,here it comes, she did not have it on a leash, i yell leash your dog, she yelled yes mamn, smart like, she could not get it to stop,or get ahold of it,sooo it got to us, she got there, as she was about to grab it, the dog took a stance, it quickly went from smelling,to this stance, no teeth showing, she grabed it. W hy would anyone be walking any dog on a street, not leashed?

I've gotten all of those comments thrown at me before and that was probably what she was thinking. It's all good until your dog hurts someone, right? It drives me bananas too.

That's one of my biggest pet peeves! Normally when I walk Ky if somebody is walking a dog off leash, when they see Ky they put a leash on so fast I giggle but when it's just Bentley they don't bother to leash.
I always give them my opinion about it...I don't even charge for it

There is a young lady,say 30 ,that has a cute little sheltie,walks it beside a very busy road,no leash, no matter how well trained, i would not chance it.The first time i saw them ,i thought that little dog was lost,and she had stopped to help it, i stopped in my car,said is that your dog?, she said yes, i said it isn't leashed, she just waved me on.

There is an elderly woman with an elderly obese golden who walks to our local park every day unleashed. The golden is very well loved (not quite so well take care of) and very well trained. She goes 20 feet away for the owner and then lopes back. She's very well socialized so nothing ever spooks her. In this case I'm ok with the dog being unleashed. But young or adult dogs, I'd prefer leashes. I also wish owners wouldn't let their dogs rush others. I always make Bear sit and wait until the new person or dog has approached on their own. No sense in rushing. Lol.

That elderly golden you mention is still somewhat at risk, though. What if she gets spooked by a car horn or by a sudden flash from sunlight hitting water or a car windshield? What if some kids run up from behind and start petting her without her seeing them? What if another dog offleash decides they don't like her scent and goes after her? Sure, she's never ever been spooked before, but as she gets older and her eyesight or her hearing starts to go, what's to say she won't become more easily spooked?

The problem here isn't necessarily that she'll hurt a person (although that could be a concern - even the sweetest dogs will protect themselves when scared), it's that she'll hurt herself.

I understand 100%. There is always the what if possibility. I think in this particular case if she were leashed and spooked, she'd hurt her owner and still her herself. It's very case specific, you know? I generally agree that all dogs should be leashed when in public areas (unless its a specified no-leash zone) but there are few exceptions. The case you referred to in the OP is def a case where the dog should be leashed. I won't even let bear go from the front door to the car without a leash. Lol!!

Don't you just love those people... I have never understood why people think it would never happen and they should have the right to run around with their dog off leash. They are dogs and you just never know.

Half of the idiots in my neighborhood walk their dog off leash around the 40 acre park that I live on. Most stay close to their owner, but some do not. Even in the freaking dark. Meanwhile, Bella and I are constantly dodging piles of dog crap that likely came out of these off leash dogs, and a few of these dogs sneak up on us in the dark and scare the crap out of me. So far, the dogs have been friendly, but it's still not cool. There's a big sign by the parking lot that reads, "Dogs Must Be On Leashes." I'm to the point where I'm going to start calling these people out. I'm definitely going to be placing a call to the PD to inquire as to why the leash laws are not enforced.
