Movies on Ipad

Can someone explain how I can download free movies to my ipad? I'd like a collection for when I go to the cabin and a plane trip. Is there also a place to watch tv show episodes, again free? Thank so much

I have an iPad but have never used it for movie viewing. It's my understanding that you can only view purchased movies loaded through iTunes.

If someone with more knowledge has different information, please let me know.

You can rip movies onto your iTunes library from DVDs you own and then sync those to your iPad.

There are lots of ways to watch TV or movies on an iPad. You can definitely do it through the iTunes store by purchasing movies or TV shows. The advantage there is that it's legal and that you can get it on any of your Apple devices (laptop, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, etc.)

However, there are lots of other ways to watch movies and TV on your iPad. The major networks have their own apps with free TV shows available, and there's also a Hulu app.

Then, for fairly modest fees, you have other options, like Hulu Plus and Netflix. Personally, we've gone for Netflix and turned off our cable, since there's so much good stuff on Netflix—tons of movies and TV shows—and it's $8/month. We can watch it on the TV with an Apple TV (we're actually watching Bones right now on Netflix on our TV as I surf GRF on a laptop).

If you're tech savvy and willing to violate copyright law, you can also Bittorrent movies for free and load them onto the iPad, though I obviously don't recommend doing anything illegal or quasi-legal.

FYI - ripping your DVDs is quasi-legal. It should be protected under fair use provisions of copyright law, but the software that enables you to rip a DVD has to break the encryption on the DVD, which technically violates the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). I've never heard of anybody being prosecuted for ripping a DVD they own, but you should be aware that you're heading into legal grey areas if you rip a DVD.

If you want to, Handbrake is an excellent utility for ripping DVDs and converting the video into iPad-friendly formats. You don't need too much tech knowledge to pull it off.

I'm totally watching Bones S:03! I haven't watched cable in 6 years. It started as a survival reason b/c I couldn't afford cable, but then I got Netflix and I didn't need cable. I love Netflix so much!

I never knew this!! Gee that seems so silly. If I bought it, I should get to use it however I want. Right? Thanks for the heads-up! I appreciate it!
