I love Standards, they're wonderful dogs. Just a heads up, though...if I were you I would start learning to groom a poodle now. I don't know where you're getting your puppy from, but maybe they can teach you. It will save you a ton of money since they're super expensive to have groomed every 4-6 weeks. And I'm talking a puppy cut, not the more intricate trims. Also, the brushing is very specialized. You have to really know what you're doing to be able to keep them from matting up.
The last groomer I had at my shop specialized in Standards, (she competed at grooming competitions across the US and Europe), so we got a lot of them in to be groomed. I would say that 90% were matted. And this was from owners that groomed them every day. It didn't look like they had mats, but if you dug your fingers into their hair you could feel them. Grooming is a great bonding time, though, so it would probably be good for you, too.
