My last final for this term in on Wednesday, we get tomorrow for "directed study"--pursuing another master's through the Air Force.

Thanks everyone! Commiseration made me feel better! Misery really does love company.

On the plus side, I am done now!! Term from hell is officially over! Not sure how the final went...seemed to go okay but this prof is so sporadic...she could stub her toe and then take it out on the class. I know that seems petty, but honestly - that's her.

I think my favourite part of the class was when she spent the whole 90 minute class telling us how awful our papers were after we handed in our first papers. The whole 90 minutes. She talked to us as if we were children, re-read the whole outline as slow as possible, and then started asking us what would be needed to get good marks on a paper. Everything we said only equaled a C paper...she never did say how to get an A (which is weird, since that's what she gave 4 people in the class and yet shot them down when they tried to answer the question). Or her reply to my answer when she called on me..."Well, that's OBVIOUS and not worth writing on the board!" Oh-kay. Don't call on me and then shoot down what I'm saying.

Fun. At least now I know not to ever take a class with her again!!

And I've poured myself a glass of hollynog, spiked heavily with rum, to help forget all the crap in the last few weeks.

I had kindof a final today-yearly review at work

Nice! I just finished with finals and got into nursing school! Hang in there. Everyone has a bum semester.

This just drives me crazy.... the problem is that on the college level professors don't have to be teachers.. in many universities teaching is secondary to their own research not to many that while we are wedded to our disciplines and we may be experts in our disciplines that does not mean that we know how to teach. Most professors have never taken a class in pedagogy or other education classes. We learn as we go... when I started teaching years ago... I was hired because I knew ASL not because I had ever taught before or had any idea what I was doing. Luckily I had some great professors in college and I fashioned my class after how they had taught me. I am lucky that teaching comes very naturally to me.... but for many they just don't have a clue...

It really upsets me when I hear stories from students who have experienced what you hve experienced and I would go and talk to the dean regardless to whether the professor has tenure or not. There is a real movement in higher education now to treat students as consumers (for better or worse... there are pros and cons to this) but with that... it gives students a lot more power when they do go and complain to a dean... and it sounds like you have good reason to complain and if a few more students complain then it might encourage someone to take early retirement or not get their contract renewed....

Congrats on being done! Your crazy professor reminds me of a professor I had years ago for a class called 'Biomedical Ethics.' This guy was a NUTJOB. He never ever got around to teaching us about biomedical ethics because he was so stuck on teaching us the basics of ethics, as well as insinuating his strong personal feelings about religion into the class whenever possible (he was also a pastor), and it drove me bonkers.

I remember after we turned in our first papers... he sat us around in a circle in the room and proceeded to point out the 1" margins he had carefully measured with a ruler and marked in red ink on ALL of our papers. We had used college rule paper which apparently does not denote a 1" margin correctly, so he had to correct it himself. And I swear to god, he spent at least 2 minutes lecturing us on how to properly STAPLE a paper together. I kid you not. He pulled out a stapler and demonstrated how it should be done. It was asinine. Frankly, I can't believe I stayed in that class full term.

Glad you got through it! I just finished finals last week so I know what a relief it is. Hope you get to relax this week!

I have one more to go (tomorrow night at 7:30 ) I had a week and a half since my last exam and have been working f/t for the past week so my brain doesnt seem to be absorbing the information .

OK I just need to comment on this.... You would not believe what students hand in to us.... Most of my students work gets turned in online so I dont even deal with papers that often but they have to hand in their final research proposal as a hard copy and from experience I have found that I need to lay out exactly what I want...

I make it clear that I don't want shiny report covers, I want staples and I think I do spend 5 minutes talking about staples... and pag numbers... I make it kind of a joke but I have 9 dogs here and all it takes is a sweep of a tail and papers are on the floor... I have received papers with folded over corners and no page numbers .... I have received papers with the corners torn and folded into this origami connection somehow... I have received binder clipped and paper clipped papers... and best yet... DUCT TAPED yes you read that correctly... I have received Duct Taped papers...

Keep in mind that professors are reactive... we start off with a 2 page syllabus and no rules and over the years we discover that we need to keep adding things to our syllabus... so it finally ends up being 8 pages long AND that we need to have very clear specified expectations or we get duct taped papers....

it seems crazy to better students but trust me... been there ... done that ... and now I do spend time talking about page numbers, and staples....

you think its crazy.. well I think its crazy to and I am the one doing it.
