From pervious threads I've read, I believe people are trying to fit the temperment and personality of a golden in a smaller more convenient package. Maybe they're looking for a lap dog? All my friend's dogs are lap dogs - they just don't realize they weigh 50+ pounds - not that I mind. lol!

I know when I was originally researching breeds, I was over the moon about the doodles. I had worked as a groomer for about 3 years and I loved my labradoodle clients. They were always obedient and patient, good natured and loving. Breeders touted that I would get the best of both breeds - and I, at the time, preferred the fro-ish curls to the short, coarse coat of a lab. But doodles were out of our price range at that moment in time, and when it was time to start our puppy search - Bear stole our hearts.

I know this was discussed in other threads, but I think the hybrids really took hold b/c some celebrity somewhere got a mutt and to make it classier, they made a fancy name like "teacup australian shepard poodle", "malti-poo", etc. Suddenly everyone wants a puppy from a breed "that's never been heard of before". Well, Bear's a Rotti Retriever, oooo la la /sarcasm

Oh, or they breed them smaller so they can be stashed in purses.

I'll claim he's my 401(k). He's truly worth is weight in gold, though gold does not seem valuable enough for this analogy.
