We just weighed Bentley because I know he's going through another growth spurt. My brother weighed himself then held Bentley (no easy task) and stepped back on the scales.
I thought it could not be right so we moved the scales to 5 different spots in the house and always came up with the same number...

82 lbs. 6 months old

He doesn't look that big but I know he's solid like a tank. When he walks across the living room it's like a herd of elephants.
I guess he will be taking after his dad.

EDIT: I just took a pic with DH for size comparison:

WOW...Bentley is so handsome. I took Mako to the vet 2 months after his elbow surgeries at 8 months old and this is what he said!
Mako should be a lean mean machine ...like the shark...not look like a whale!!!
AAGGHH...I almost died...I didn't think he was overwight at all...he was 75 pounds....granted he had 6-8 weeks of no excersise due to surgery but you could still feel his ribs!

Yes the pic on the couch he's all bunched up. I can feel his ribs with no problem. The Vet hasn't been pleased with his weight since he was 6 weeks old. He's also never been pleased with any of my other dogs weight, no matter what they weighed he always says they should lose 5 lbs.

To gauge weight by picture, you need a pic taken of the side of the dog standing properly (not bunched up). And then you need an overhead pic. <- You can't gauge a dog's weight with them sitting all bunched up in somebody's lap.

The sideways pic looks at the outline of the dog - and you want to see a tuck. Doesn't mean a dog isn't overweight if you see a tuck, but you want to see a tuck there (if a lot of feathering, you can still go by the dog's jacket I think, or regardless that's where you do a hands on check). If there is no tuck, that means the dog is obese.

The overhead pic looks for a waistline (behind the rib cage). If it's pretty much a straight line from the widest part of the rib cage to the hips, that's a sign your dog is overweight. If there is a swell or bulge right there, then your dog is obese.

Feeling for the rib cage - I think hotel4dogs kinda opened my eyes when it came to that, as I've always just felt my dog's sides. But you really are feeling from the top of your dog's back. I guess with your hand flat and with light pressure with your fingers on either side. If your dog feels pretty solid up there, then he can lose a few pounds.

I'm hoping to control Bertie's weight gain over the next 2 months and ideally he should be 60 at 6 months. I think Jacks was at the same point and touched 70lbs by 12 months. Which was the point when our vet saw the weight on the paperwork and came storming to the room fully prepared to scold us until he saw Jacks. LOL.

With Bertie, I'm sure it's going to be interesting because he's been gaining 5-10 lbs every week. And he's 35lbs at 3 months. And I've been keeping him quiet as far as exercise the last few weeks because of ice on the road, so he is not as muscular as Jacks was at the same age. o_O

ETA - I forgot to say, but if your dog is over standard (I think you said that Bentley is full height? Or getting tall), then you can't go by the weight on the standard. You have to do the picture/hands on check. So I wouldn't freak out too much about the weight on the scale alone and compare it to average sized goldens. With Jacks and his thyroid issues (at his heaviest he got up to 85lbs), I do monthly scale visits at our vet. This is the best way to control your dog's weight, because instead of suddenly having to get your dog to lose 30lbs, you may be looking at only 5-10lbs. And with a 6 month puppy, I wouldn't go too crazy because he is probably still growing.

Hi Joyce, Bentley is naturally a big boy, I was looking at the lovely pics you posted when you first got him. Some dogs are like humans they are just made that way. When I was a girl the nurse weighed me three times to make sure she had it right! (think I am scarred for life.) Whatever size he grows too I think he is one of the cutest pups on the forum. Good luck at the vets.

I am so happy you posted this thread.. I believe Buddy is going to be HUGE.. He is a week younger than Holly and sooo much bigger than her. I have had people ask me if he is cross because his face and paws are so big.
At our vet appointment he was 10 Kg - 22 lbs.. and he is only 3 months. When vet was examining him she commented he looked all golden to me and with his paw and head size and his extra skin a BIG boy.... I am trying to keep on top of it and ensure he is healthy and not overweight. I know his growth spurt is coming and I admit I cant wait to watch him transform..... Our big boys.... LOL equals BIG LOVE,

If you look at my avatar photo, you will see Buddy next to Holly, and yes he is a week younger... LOL

Try not to get too obsessed about it all. Their genetics is what will make the difference. As long as a puppy is fed appropriately, and exercised appropriately, he/she will end up at the weight their genes intended for them. And you won't really know until they're done growing since they all grow at different rates in spurts etc. When I brought Tucker home I thought I was going to have a moose--he was 20 lbs-ish at nine weeks! But his growth tapered off and he's now big--at the high end of standard but within the standard range. The difference between my two is quite obvious also--Bella just has a lighter frame than Tucker. He's solid and tank-like. Bella is more like a gazelle. She eats more than Tucker and weighs 20 lbs. less.

Well, that's never happened. Bentley weighs 82 lbs on the Vets scale too, here's the kicker.. He said that for Bentley's body frame he's at a good weight. He said he could stand to lose 1 or 2 lbs but I think he was just giving me a hard time because he smiled when he said it.
He said Bentley's neck is so big because it's all muscle, he said he has very strong muscles...ah ya..I know, try to hold this tank in the bathtub!

Ky has lost one pound this month so she's 105 lbs. He was shocked when he gave Ky a treat before Bentley and Bentley ran over and shoved Ky down and took it away. He said he wouldn't have believed it if he didn't watch it happen :D

Personally I'd be concerned about any golden puppy who weighed 80+ lbs at six months. No he doesn't look grossly obese but he is not heavily boned and probably doesn't need to carry that much weight, especially at this age, it's not doing him any favors. What did his parents weigh?

Molly grew over FOUR inches from the time she was 6 months old until now. She was 18 inches then and over 22 inches now. Even the orthopedic specialist who saw her at 6 months did not think she was going to make the standard.
Wow! The topic of "reaching standard" has come up a couple of times since Casper was 6 months. When we picked him up from the breeder, we asked "How big do you think he'll be?" Without giving him a second look, she said, "23 to 24 inches." We still laugh, because she was dead certain. 23 to 24 inches. And guess what, he's 23 to 24 inches. She knows her dogs.

I'm not going to worry about Bentley's weight. As long as he's not over eating, he's getting proper exercise and his Vet says he's good I'm happy. He will be whatever he will be.
His daddy is the biggest GR I've ever seen so I'm thinking that explains it. After thinking that Ky was going to die today, it put things into prospective for me.

Wow! Now I feel mean about Loki because at just turned six months he is over 60lbs & I thought he was getting a bit too solid-looking. So a few days ago I cut his extras right back ...still correct amount of kibble though. He is looking a bit more svelte now. I will not tell him what Bentley weighs, or he'll be demanding his extras back again. Lol
