Does anyone know of a home remedy for hot spots? Our poor Jenny had them all over her back and is losing her hair. We went to the vet, and got her prednisone, some pain pills and it only worked temporarily. We do have her on an allergy pill, but she has bald spots all over. Thanks in advance.
Check her thyriod, 6 panel test sent to MSU or Hemopet. I use Sulfodene myself (never failed) but members here swear on Listerine. Gold Bold powder is great too as long as you don't cake it on. Search the forum for hot spots, tons of info.
Very Important: If you decide to get it, ONLY get the ORGANIC "Apple Cider Vinegar". This organic ACV contains the nutrient-rich sediment, which is called "the Mother". One of the more popular brands is Braggs sold at the Health Food store, e.g., Whole Foods, or the health food section of your local supermarket. Both Whole Foods & Trader Joes have their own brand of organic ACV, as well.
Here's one of this forum's links with info about how to treat hot spots and allergies, etc.:
Cadie, just noticed you're in Westerville, OH! I'm in between Dublin & Worthington. Have you been to the new Godown Dogpark in Worthington yet? If not, let me know & we and our pups could meet!
I agree with the thyroid panel and also that for occasional hot spots the ACV works great, but it does sound like there may be an underlying condition and if the thyroid panel comes back fine I would look into an allergy of some sort.
Clean the area with Listerine, and when dry, lightly dust with Gold Bond powder. It works.
If hots spots are frequent, please have her thyroid checked as frequent hot spots, and also ear infections, are a common symptom of hypothyroidism in Goldens.
My boy has hot spots at times--I have found for him, avoiding certain foods seem to help (chicken for instance with him)--not solve, but help keep them at bay. Best of luck to you both.
